 How to use NGL on Instagram to receive anonymous messages


A few weeks ago, some people posted stories on Instagram anonymously. We found it very curious since Meta's social network does not offer this option (so far). The tool that makes this possible is called “NGL — anonymous q&a” and, in this article, we will explain everything about how it works. How to use NGL App



NGL is an anonymous Q&A app and its acronym comes from the English expression “not gonna lie”. In Portuguese, the free translation means “I will not lie”. Does it make sense for your brand to adhere to it? Read on to decide!

How does the NGL app work?

The NGL app works free of charge for Android smartphone users and for iPhone users. It is so simple to use that you don't even need to sign up or integrate your Instagram account. Just inform the @ of your profile and NGL automatically creates your link for receiving anonymous messages



  • open the app and inform the @ of your profile;
  • read the instructions for use for Instagram Stories or close it to start using the app;
  • choose one of 10 question box options for your custom link; How to use NGL App
  • on the main screen (Play) click on “copy link” to copy and use your link wherever you want.




An important point to be highlighted is that the respondents do not need to download the NGL to be able to interact with the author of the link. As it is about anonymity, there is no request for personal data (name, email or @). Wrote, and clicked on “Send!”: message received by the link creator.


How to use NGL in Instagram stories?

Since you've already downloaded and created your custom NGL link, you can use it like an Instagram Stories question box. To create an anonymous question box, follow the steps below:


  • open the app on your cell phone;
  • choose any of the available question boxes;
  • Click on “copy link” or “Share!”;
  • create a Story on your Instagram and select the Link sticker;
  • paste the link copied from the app on the Link sticker;

move the Link sticker to the position indicated by the story generated by NGL (image below) or anywhere in the content created by you.

An observation: editing the phrase from the NGL question box is only allowed in the first option (the one in the print above). The others are thematic and standardized. 


To respond to anyone who left a message in the anonymous question box, follow these steps:


  • the open app then click the “Inbox” tab;
  • select any received message;
  • click “reply” to automatically reply in an Instagram Story.

How to find out who texted on NGL?

There is no way to know the name of the person who sent the message on NGL since there is not even space for them to include this information. Considering the anonymity proposal of the app, it would be contradictory to have that.


However, if you want to know the approximate location and type of device of the sender of the message, the app offers a Pro service (paid) that can be purchased for BRL 33.90 per week (value informed when we tested the app on 10/07 /2022).


Is NGL safe?

NGL is safe because it does not require registration or ask for the Instagram profile password to release the use of the app, that is, it does not have access to the profile's privacy settings. The application only collects your profile picture, which is public data.  How to use NGL App


On the other hand, anyone can enter their Instagram username (you're @) and thus use it as if they owned the link. We couldn't find an explanation for this in the app's terms of service or privacy policy.


If you want to stop using NGL, access the app and click on the gear icon; then select Settings; and, finally, “Delete Account > Yes, delete account”. That's it, the link that was assigned to your profile will no longer exist, unless you decide to return.


Using NGL on your Instagram Story or other social media helps collect feedback or queries from unidentified customers. As it is a new tool, it can attract more eyes to your story. It can be used as an informal survey with followers as long as the topic is related to the subjects addressed in the editorial line of the profile. However, it is not indicated to adopt it in more serious marketing research, since complete results require detailed information to be analyzed.
